Printer Says Out of Paper When the Tray Is Full: Fix the Feed

Quick answer: Check the selected tray, paper settings and loading before cleaning anything. Test a small stack of supported plain paper, then follow your exact model’s pickup-roller instructions if feeding still fails.

Read the tray named in the message

“Out of paper” can mean the job requests a tray or size that is not available, even when another tray is full. Record the message and compare it with the paper source selected in the print dialog. A document feeder used for scanning is not the same thing as the printer’s input tray.

Reload a controlled test stack

  1. Cancel duplicate jobs and remove the paper from the indicated tray.
  2. Check for bent corners, moisture, curled sheets, scraps or foreign objects.
  3. Load a modest stack of clean, flat paper supported by the printer. Do not mix sizes or media types.
  4. Align the stack and set the guides to its edges without squeezing or bending it. Stay below the tray fill mark.
  5. Seat the tray fully, select matching size and type, then send one page.

Do not push the stack into moving rollers during a test. If the printer requires a specific rear-feed or manual-feed method for specialist media, use its manual rather than improvising with the main tray.

Use the result to distinguish settings from feeding

Check the job’s paper request

Open the print dialog and compare its requested paper size and source with the actual tray. A4 and US Letter are different sizes. If the printer display also registers tray contents, make that registration agree with what you physically loaded. Cancel the old failed job before sending a corrected one.

Clean rollers only when the model instructions permit it

Pickup rollers can accumulate dust and paper fibres, but their access and cleaning methods differ. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your model, including powering down before reaching inside, the approved cloth or liquid and the required drying time. Do not spray cleaner into the printer or scrape rubber rollers with sharp tools.

If you cannot safely reach a user-serviceable roller, stop. A generic guide is not a reason to remove casing or touch a laser printer’s hot internal parts. Cleaning is also not a cure for a damaged feed component.

When to request service

If a clean supported stack will not feed after the documented checks, or if you hear grinding, contact support with the exact error and test results. Mention whether local reports feed and which tray is affected. Avoid repeatedly forcing paper into a printer that is not picking it up.

Confirm the fix

Print a one-page report and then a short multi-page document. Restore special media only after the plain-paper baseline works, using the correct tray and settings.
