Quick answer: Change the duplex binding edge to match how you turn the page. For a portrait document read like a book, start with long-edge binding; test two labelled pages before printing the full file.
The binding edge controls how the back is oriented
A page can print correctly on the front yet appear upside down when you turn it the way you intended. Before rotating the source document, inspect the two-sided setting. Long-edge and short-edge binding describe the physical edge around which the sheet is turned.
| Document and reading direction | Starting setting to test |
|---|---|
| Portrait; turn left or right like a book | Long edge. |
| Portrait; flip upward like a notepad | Short edge. |
| Landscape; turn left or right | Short edge. |
| Landscape; flip upward | Long edge. |
Driver labels vary: you may see Flip on long edge, Long-edge binding or a binding diagram. Use the diagram if wording is unclear. Mixed portrait and landscape pages can require separate tests rather than one global assumption.
Make a two-page orientation test
- Create two pages labelled PAGE 1 and PAGE 2, each with TOP printed near its upper edge.
- Select the desired portrait or landscape orientation.
- Enable two-sided printing and choose the binding edge from the table.
- Print only these two pages on one sheet.
- Turn the sheet exactly as you will read the finished document. If the back is upside down, change only the binding edge and retest.
This small test is more informative than wasting a full report. Keep the successful settings written down, especially if you alternate between portrait reports and landscape spreadsheets.
Find the setting in the right place
In Acrobat or Reader, look for Print on both sides of paper and the edge-to-flip choice. If the application does not expose it, inspect the printer’s properties or preferences. Availability depends on the installed driver and printer capability; the app cannot add a physical duplex unit that the model lacks.
Manual duplex needs a loading test too
When the printer has no automatic duplex support, the app may ask you to reload the stack. Follow its prompt and the model’s tray orientation instructions. Use one marked scrap sheet first to identify which side and edge re-enter the printer. Different output trays reverse stacks differently, so a universal “face up” instruction would be unreliable.
If the back is missing rather than upside down
That is a different symptom. Check whether two-sided printing is actually enabled, whether the selected queue exposes duplex, and whether the loaded paper size and type support automatic two-sided use. Return to plain supported media for a baseline test.
Save the correct preset
Once both sides read correctly, save a clearly named preset if your app supports it, such as Portrait book duplex. Recheck the print preview for the real document, including page range and orientation. A printer firmware reset is not the first response to a binding-edge mistake.
