Printer Cuts Off the Bottom or Side of a Page: Size, Scale and Margins

Quick answer: Match the loaded paper and selected paper size, then use Fit for ordinary documents. For labels, templates or measured drawings, preserve actual size and solve the layout or paper mismatch instead of silently shrinking it.

Find out whether the content is already missing in preview

Open print preview before sending another job. If the bottom or right side is absent there, the app’s layout or scaling is the first place to investigate. If preview is complete but output is cropped, compare the selected printer, physical paper and printable area. Save a sample rather than changing every setting at once.

Check all three paper-size choices

  1. Read the actual paper size loaded in the tray. A4 is 210 × 297 mm; US Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches. They are not interchangeable.
  2. Set the same paper size in the printer preferences or print dialog.
  3. Check the document’s own page setup or PDF page dimensions.
  4. If the printer registers tray contents on its display, make that registration agree too.

A printer requesting another paper size may hold the job or print differently than expected. Correct the mismatch, cancel the old job and send a one-page test. Do not force a size-warning override before understanding what the document needs.

Choose scaling for the actual task

TaskScaling approach
Ordinary report; exact dimensions are unimportantFit to the selected printable area.
Large PDF; do not enlarge small pagesShrink oversized pages.
Labels, measurement template or scaled drawingActual size; correct layout, margins and paper.
Photo intended to fill a sheetConfirm supported borderless mode and cropping.

In Acrobat, Size under Page Sizing & Handling offers Fit, Actual size, Shrink oversized pages and Custom Scale. Actual size does not shrink material that is larger than the chosen output area, so cropping can be expected. Fit changes physical dimensions, which is unacceptable for some templates.

Respect the printable margins

Many printers cannot place marks at every edge in ordinary mode. Move essential content inside the printable area or use supported borderless media and settings when that is truly the intended output. Borderless photo modes may enlarge and crop an image; they are not a universal way to print an exact-sized technical drawing.

If only a spreadsheet or webpage is affected

Review the app’s print area, page breaks, columns and orientation. A very wide sheet may be split across pages rather than lost. Compare the preview page count and inspect the next page before deciding that the printer cut off a column.

Verify with a single representative page

Print the page containing the bottom line or far-right column. For exact-size output, include a known measurement and check it with a ruler. If the result fits but dimensions changed, the problem has been hidden rather than solved.

Record the working size and scale as a preset where appropriate. Keep separate presets for ordinary reports and measured templates so that a later job does not inherit the wrong scaling.
