Black Ink Not Printing but Colour Works: Check the Black Channel

Quick answer: Print a nozzle or quality report from the printer itself. If black is missing there too, check the black supply and follow the exact model’s maintenance sequence; if the report is normal, investigate the document settings.

Limit the problem before buying a cartridge

Black text missing from one document does not prove that the black cartridge has failed. Colour printing also does not prove that every black ink path works. Use a printer-generated diagnostic report and a new plain-paper document with large black text as separate tests.

Compare the black portion of the report

Some printers have more than one black ink type or change ink use with paper settings. Follow the labels and sample pattern in your own manual. Do not assume that a photograph’s dark areas prove the document-black channel is functioning.

Check the supply without dismantling the printer

  1. Read any supply warning on the display or official utility.
  2. Confirm that the cartridge or tank configuration matches the exact model.
  3. If a cartridge was just installed, review the official fitting steps and specified protective-seal removal.
  4. Do not open sealed parts or touch the nozzles and contacts to see whether ink comes out.

An estimated ink level is only part of the evidence. Keep the cartridge number, installation date and report sample. On a tank printer, use the manufacturer’s filling and setup instructions; a generic cartridge procedure may not apply.

Follow one documented maintenance sequence

Use the normal printhead-cleaning option recommended for the model, then compare a new nozzle pattern. Move to deeper maintenance only when the manual instructs it, including any required waiting period. Never borrow the complete sequence from a different model merely because both use ink tanks.

For example, Canon’s G2000 documentation uses a nozzle check to identify missing output. HP’s Smart Tank 500 guidance also distinguishes printer-side print-quality tasks from document settings. Those examples support a diagnostic approach; their button sequences are not interchangeable.

If the internal black report is normal

Use ordinary plain-paper settings and print your short black-text test from another app. Inspect the original document for white font, hidden text, unusual layers or an incorrect page range. Compare the print preview with the output. Preserve the original file when making a fresh export.

Know when maintenance has reached its limit

If black remains absent after the permitted steps, ask the manufacturer whether the affected supply or printhead needs service. Report the before-and-after patterns. Repeated cleaning without improvement is not evidence that one more cycle will work, and it consumes ink.

Confirm recovery with the internal pattern and a real text page before sending a long document.
