Quick answer: Check Windows Update and the exact printer model before installing a driver. Match the package to your Windows version and processor; on ARM PCs, start with Windows Add device unless the manufacturer says otherwise.
What the message does—and does not—tell you
“Driver is unavailable” concerns the software Windows uses to communicate with the printer. It does not by itself prove that the printer is broken. If the printer can make its own report or another device prints to it, preserve that working setup while you troubleshoot the PC.
Write down three details before downloading
- The full model number from the printer label, including any suffix. Similar-looking models can use different software.
- Your Windows edition and version, shown in Settings → System → About.
- System type on that same page: an x64 processor and an ARM processor need compatible software.
Use this checklist to judge a download page. A model family name alone is not enough. If the site cannot confirm your model and Windows version, do not install a random “universal repair” tool to fill the gap.
Start with Windows Update
- Open Settings → Windows Update and check for updates.
- Review available driver updates, including Optional updates when that section is present.
- Install the appropriate update and restart if requested.
- Return to Printers & scanners and send a Windows test page.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver
Go directly to the printer manufacturer’s official support site, search for the exact model, and select the operating system. Follow the package’s connection instructions: some installers want USB connected only after a prompt. Driver download adverts and paid update utilities are not the manufacturer’s support page.
For a Copilot+ or other ARM-based PC, Microsoft identifies cases where traditional manufacturer installers cannot add printers. Try Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device, unless the manufacturer supplies specific Windows-on-ARM instructions. An x64 package is not automatically the correct answer for an ARM PC.
Re-add only the failing printer entry
If you must remove and re-add the printer, first note its name, network address, preferred paper settings and any secure-print settings. Cancel your pending jobs. Avoid deleting all printer entries or working drivers. A workplace print-server connection should be restored with IT’s instructions, not a guessed local driver.
Confirm both basic printing and the features you need

If a test page works but a special feature is missing, identify the installed driver and compare it with the manufacturer’s feature requirements. Supply support with the model, Windows version, system type and exact error. Do not remove Windows security updates merely to try an older driver.
